Is your lawn getting enough water?
When lawns are watered on a fixed schedule—especially with an automated sprinkler system—lawns tend to become more susceptible to drought stress. When stress occurs, lawns can become thin and brown, or worse yet, die off entirely. To combat drought stress and maintain your lawn all summer long, you’ll need to test your soil every other week to ensure that it has sufficient water content (it should be moist 1 below ground) and re-adjust your watering schedule accordingly. To determine whether or not your soil is adequately wet, push a finger into the topsoil about 2 deep; if it feels moist 1 down, you are good to go.
Are you using the right fertilizer?
If you have a lawn and are looking to get it ready for spring, there’s no doubt that you’ll start thinking about getting it ready soon. Many people simply grab a bag of fertilizer off their local big-box store shelf and hope for results, but your lawn has very specific needs. While all lawns want some nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in their soil, certain strains need more than others. The best way to know what your yard needs is to check with your local extension service or garden center—but until then, here are some basic tips to keep in mind when shopping around.
